The Ancient Egyptians were the first known people to have used leather purses. Evidence of this can be seen from hieroglyphics wherein some people are depicted carrying pouches around the waist area. Another famous leather purse holder is the ancient iceman also called the \”Otzi Iceman\” who is a mummy about 5000 years old found near the Italian and Austrian border in the Alps.

But apart from these instances the next time purses were recorded to have been used in a big way is much later in the 14th century Europe. In Europe of course the quality of the bag showed social status and class. Obviously the more embroidery and quality of work done on a bag meant that the person was higher up the social ladder. During this time purses or bags were meant for the ladies only. So not surprisingly the bag had to match whatever they were wearing.

The 16th century ushered a new age for men. It was now considered proper for them to have purses. Their purses were embroidered with gold. The purses they gave to their brides had pictures embroidered on them. Women used to display their purses but since the fashion of the day became more elaborate, they started wearing them under their skirts. Later in the 17th century, men\’s fashion called for pants with pockets. With this new innovation, men no longer carried purses and bags. Instead they had small purses or pouches for their coins. It may be at this time that the leather coin purse was starting to be used. Nevertheless, the old coin purses were made of cloth tied with a string.

In the 19th century with the advent of neo-classical styles, women started to carry their bags again. The fashion of the day allowed no place for bags or purses under the dress. Thus they displayed their embroidered bags that matched their dresses. Nevertheless, it was only during the 20th century that the term hand bag was used to describe their bags. The bags then had evolved from 1 compartment bags to 2 or more compartment bags. It was also during that time when hand bags were no longer designed solely to match what women wore.

In World War 2 a new revolution caught the bag fashion world by storm. Plastics began to be used to manufacture bags. After the war, major designers also used plastic to create their signature bags. Since that time, bag fashion has greatly changed thanks to their choice. The reputation of respected designers carried over to their creations such that the creations gained credibility simply by having the names of designers plastered on them. Nowadays, it is unthinkable for women to lack bags. Such bags carry practically everything a woman needs such that they have essentially become \”home away from home\”.
